Northern Karate’s 40th AnniversaryNorthern Karate Schools (NKS) celebrated its 40th anniversary with students, supporters and staff who are all a part of a four-decade success story on Nov. 24, 2012. With 10 locations across the GTA, including Maple, Richmond Hill, Woodbridge and Thornhill, NKS has sharpened the body, mind and spirits of people of all ages. “A lot of places change for the sake of change. While we continue to adapt and expand our curriculum, we’ve always stayed true to our founding principles,” says NKS Rutherford director Kyoshi Cos Vona. “I think that’s the main reason we’ve had staying power.”

Hats on for Awareness Hatsquerade Gala

Hats on for AwarenessOver 400 people attended the 4th Annual Hats On for Awareness Hatsquerade gala this year wearing their favourite — and at times outrageous — hats in support of mental health. Keynote speaker Michael Landsberg of TSN’S Off the Record brought the crowd to its feet with his stirring anecdote on battling depression.The event was a success, raising $65,000 in support of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

Heatwave York 2012

Heatwave 2012The seventh annual Heatwave York Region corporate volleyball tournament on June 16, 2012, served up good times and competitive matches. The one-day tournament featured a co-ed beach volleyball tournament with 21 teams, as well as great food, drinks and prizes. Since the volleyball challenge started in 1995, the event has expanded across the GTA and includes a winter tournament, Icewave, as well as additional tournaments in Halton, Waterloo, Durham, Halton, Peel and the Hamilton-Niagara area. All proceeds support SickKids and the SickKids Centre for Research and Learning. To date, the weekend volleyball events have raised more than $2 million for childhood cancer research at SickKids.

Rebel Golf Tournament

Rebel Golf  TournamentThe 11th annual Rebel Golf Tournament in support of the Down Syndrome Association of York Region was a huge success, thanks to perfect weather, Glen Eagle Golf Club’s amazing service, over 40 sponsors and a tireless crew of volunteers. More than 120 golfers helped raise over $10,000, bringing the grand total to almost $100,000 in 11 years. This wouldn’t have been possible without organizers Aurelio Calabretta and Claudio Chiappetta.
