ParalympicsInspiring people around the world, athletes with disabilities made a splash at the London 2012 Paralympic Games from August 29 until September 9, 2012. Seven gold, 15 silver and 9 bronze medals were awarded to the Canadian athletes, for a total of 31 medals. Superstars Jay-Z and Rihanna were among the performers at the closing ceremonies. Read more

Vaughan Mayor Signs Agreement with Province of Milan

Vaughan Mayor Signs Agreement with Province of MilanWith an objective to establish close relationships with cities that have similar goals, Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua signed a memorandum of understanding with Guido Podestà, president of the Province of Milan, Italy. Effective in three years, the memorandum will promote a mutually beneficial exchange of information, sport and culture. The signing ceremony was held in the capital of Lombardy, marking the beginning of a business relationship between the Province of Milan and the City of Vaughan.

Mayor Bevilacqua looks at Milan as “the gateway for innovation, entrepreneurial activity and business into Italy and the European Union.” Because of this positive outlook, he believes the bilateral agreement will benefit Vaughan greatly, giving the city the ability to pursue economic opportunities.

The Immaculate Conception Parish 7th Charity Golf Tournament On May 31, 2012, the seventh annual ShareLife Charity golf tournament for Immaculate Conception Parish took place at the beautiful Nobleton Lakes Golf course. The sun-filled day was made brighter by the smiles and excitement of 150 golfers that joined the tournament. The lovely volunteers, amazing staff at Nobleton Lakes, a delicious barbequed lunch, special dinner and prizes made this day a huge success. This event is a great opportunity for the parish community to get together to raise funds for ShareLife, while having fun volunteering, golfing and sponsoring the event. This year’s tournament raised over $30,000.

Vaughan's Concert in the ParkThis summer, Vaughan held its 18th annual series of concerts in the park! Free of charge, residents came together as a community and enjoyed fun-filled musical events, including The Game: A Live Tribute to the Queen, Hollywood: Live Musical Production of Michael Bublé featuring Paul Schwarz and The Toronto All-Star Big Band. The final concert, Elevation: International U2 Tribute Band, was held on Aug. 7, 2012, at the Outdoor Amphitheatre of the North Thornhill Community Centre. On Canada Day, the City of Vaughan held an exclusive concert at Mackenzie Glen District Park in Maple, with performances by Platinum Blonde, JRDN, Talk, Tamika Soul and Bridge 6.

Toronto Women's ExpoThe Toronto Women’s Expo, held at the Days Hotel in North York on June 10, 2012, was an incredible event showcasing 97 exhibitors. Presentations, demonstrations, speakers and exhibitors were on-hand to provide information to 700 guests. Charities such as the Yellow Brick House, WomanAide, Dress for Success, A Celebration of Women Foundation and Canadian Breast Cancer Association received support and awareness. The next expo will be even bigger, supporting five worthy charities in November at Downsview Park.

Rev It UpThe first annual Rev It Up event was a great success. On July 15, 2012, the event for SickKids commenced at Ride Motorcycles Toronto, and eventually reached the beautiful Vineland Estates Winery in the Niagara Escarpment for lunch and a wine tour. Guest celebrities included emcee Walter Venafro of Jazz FM 91, former Miss Universe Canada Elena Semikina, grand marshal Jillian Smith, Dr. Joel Kirsch of Sickkids, and Justin Bieber’s father, Jeremy Bieber. Over $50,000 was raised, thanks to all of the dedicated riders, sponsors and volunteers.

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua Golf ClassicMayor Maurizio Bevilacqua’s Annual Charity Golf Classic was an overwhelming success, with more than 200 golfers raising thousands of dollars for not-for-profit and community organizations. “It is an incredible feeling to be the mayor of a city where the spirit of generosity defines its very essence,” says Vaughan Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua.
