Living up to the reputable name, every stylist is talented, creative, and loves what they do.

Lucky for us, Antonio Piro, associate owner of Fiorio Vaughan, met the love of his life when he came to Canada nine years ago. Although he left his home in Italy to be with his wife, Piro made sure he didn’t leave his passion, zest for life, and breezy personality behind.

Piro enjoys exploring his creative side with short and edgy haircuts, but he assures clients that he only designs hairstyles that will suit their personality and lifestyle. “If I cut and style your hair and then you go home and you can’t style it yourself, that means I failed,” says Piro. Fiorio stylists always strive to combine creativity with manageability, making sure their clients look good every day, and not just on the day they visit the salon.

While Piro juggles the roles of confidant and hairstylist in his salon, he gets an inside scoop on what makes women feel beautiful. “When you have nice hair, you feel comfortable with yourself,” says Piro. With a fresh colour and cut, a woman’s confidence is enhanced, and Piro insists the sexiest thing about a woman is confidence.

I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.” City Life magazine introduces booming entrepreneurs in the GTA who have carved their own successful existences. These great achievers give us a good reason to never give up. All admirable and ambitious, with impressive businesses, these inspiring community icons are showing our readers what it takes to lead successful lives and achieve their goals.

Santina Mariani of Zero 20 Bambini: Everything for Everyone
A landmark in the city of Vaughan for the past 27 years, Zero 20 Bambini is a business based on excellent service, quality clothing and prices that a growing family can afford. Santina Mariani and her sister, Anna Turrin, created a unique destination, an affordable designer boutique that dresses children of every shape and size, from head to toe. It’s a massive store with an endless selection of anything and everything you could possibly need for any occasion.

Zero 20 is not your typical, high-end, expensive boutique. This one-stop shop is like a department store for children. Hard-to-find boys’ and husky sizes are always available. ”We train our staff of 18 to be friendly and helpful, never pretentious or pushy,” says Mariani. They give their customers value for their money, which creates a relationship of trust and has been key to their success.

“We are here every day for our clients. If you are not committed and dedicated to a business, don’t even start,” says Mariani. They were awarded Retail of the Year 2009 by the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce, a well-deserved achievement.

The owners shop the world to fill the wants and the needs of a Zero 20 customer. “The only reason we exist is to give the customer what they need. We listen to every suggestion and try to accomodate them,” explains Mariani. With elegant chandeliers, relaxing couches and rows of beautiful white dresses, girls transform into little princesses as they try on tiaras, gowns and shoes for their big day as a flower girl, or to celebrate their first communion. For the boys, there is another room full of suits, shirts in a rainbow of colours and ties to complement.

Focusing on formal and religious occasions, Zero 20 has something for everyone. Baptisms for Catholic, Christian or Orthodox ceremonies command a very large department that has everything imaginable, from simple cotton dresses to heirloom quality silk beaded gowns. “I’m sure we have the biggest selection in Canada, and if we don’t have it, our in-house designer can make it so,” boasts Mariani. For the boys, the silk or linen suits topped with “paper boy” hats are irresistible.

Each child’s individual style is covered. Popular brands – of which there are more than 50 – include Lacoste, Diesel, Geox, Puma, Deux par Deux, Miniman, and Hugo Boss. There are sales throughout the year and all brand labels are cleared at the end of each season at half price. Join the newsletter and be the first to know.

Whether it’s the friendly atmosphere, affordable prices or the convenient hours (five weeknights until 9 p.m.), shopping is always a pleasure at Zero 20. www.zero20.com 905.851.6041

Enticing the Palates of Vaughan
With almost 20 years of restaurant experience, John Di Vittorio knows how to turn an ordinary dining experience into something spectacular. “Hard work, determination, and a lot of patience,” is what Di Vittorio, the owner of Vinsanto Ristorante, credits for his successful and highly regarded business. Vinsanto has become a favourite in the Vaughan community and continues to impress with its impeccable cuisine and rustic décor. Customers come back because “they love the overall experience of the restaurant – from the food, the service and the ambiance,” says the entrepreneur.

Di Vittorio is no stranger to the industry, having worked at various restaurants throughout his life including Coppi, Rosewater Supper Club, Mercato, and Crush Wine Bar. “The fact that I’ve had so much experience has prepared me for this exciting venture of having my own restaurant,” says Di Vittorio. According to the hardworking owner, the key to success is being there seven days a week and focusing your energy on making clients happy. Over the years, and at many different venues, Di Vittorio has learned how to run a restaurant and host events that boast perfection.

The irresistible menu at Vinsanto is definitely an appealing factor for many customers. The delicious calamari fritti or unique Funghi di Bosco, which is arugula salad topped with oyster mushrooms, parmigianno, extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar, is a great way to excite the appetite. For a main course, there are many innovative choices. From the delicious Agnello alla Vinsanto, which contains a beautiful rack of lamb with a pommery mustard demi-glaze, to the exquisite Pappardelle Vinsanto, everyone is sure to find a dish to tantalize their taste buds. Pappardelle noodles, braised veal, shallots, and wild mushrooms with a white truffle sauce all come together to creatively define the exceptional taste of one of Vinsanto’s signature dishes.

The exclusive and mouth-watering selection of food is only one reason why Vinsanto is a hot spot in the community. Di Vittorio expresses overwhelming gratification for the success his restaurant has experienced over the years. “Meeting so many great people in the city of Vaughan and the community of Woodbridge has made the experience even that much more satisfying.

The restaurant projects an elegance that entices every patron. Passion, ambiance and decadence remains the restaurant’s motto and appropriately defines the overall dining experience you immerse yourself in once you open the doors of Vinsanto. Indulge with a glass of wine at the bar, savour the taste of Italy with homemade Tiramisu, or relax on the patio while sampling the delectable Antipasto Vinsanto.

The overall feel of the restaurant is appropriate for all occasions and attracts people of all ages. Whether you are looking for a trendy atmosphere to celebrate a birthday or a relaxing environment to have lunch with a friend, Vinsanto Ristorante proves to be the perfect location.

The atmosphere is created with an open-concept kitchen that invites guests to share in the excitement and watch the chefs in action. The main dining area is seamlessly decorated with antique chandeliers and is ideal for a variety of functions. Accommodating 60 guests in the main room, 24 in the private dining area, and 30 on the patio, Vinsanto is available for corporate or social events. The versatility of the venue has contributed to its ongoing success, and has made Vinsanto host of many celebrations and group gatherings.

Making a difference, one weight at a time.
Standard gyms are often a person’s first go-to method to shed off those extra pounds and bring back health into their lives. Paul Walker, however, had a passion for group training women – because he found they were always more serious about fitness – and found there weren’t too many group training fitness services available that were able to do just that. He decided to take it upon himself to create boot camp classes and a fitness studio called Paul’s Boot Camp (PBC) by Integrity Fitness, where women get a full, personal, effective fitness experience, both indoors and outdoors.

Indoor fitness classes are often offered at gyms but they are indoors. Walker was inspired to present fitness classes outside so that women could enjoy nature and get fit.

“Every summer, on my way to train clients indoor, I would drive by a farm with an old bus advertising their fresh produce. I thought, ‘I would love to bring my clients here and train them outside.’ I could envision them enjoying the summer day while training and exercising. The bus would be converted to store all the equipment I would need. Even better, I could move the location as I needed.”

Up to the age of 12, Walker – now founder of Integrity Fitness, professional and certified personal trainer, certified sports nutritionist and lifestyle and wellness coach – was overweight and one of the heaviest kids in his class. Through fitness, he found a way to develop numerous skills that continue to help him lead an optimistic life with confidence, determination and leadership.

Walker’s need to interact with people, along with his goal of giving others the tools and instructions needed to stay healthy and live affluent lives, ignited his idea of creating a way to move away from the regular gym concept with its high-pressure contracts and sales and instead provide a way for people to really enjoy and experience fitness.

“I decided to take more of a personal side to fitness. I guess in the end I’m more of a humanitarian – I like to coach and teach, and this is just the way I chose to do that,” says Walker.

“Everyone has different needs. My need is to help people and I get inspired by that,” he says.

Initially, his concept of a gym on wheels (Mobile-Fit) lacked support and few people understood his vision. Walker initially found it difficult to get his revolutionary method of fitness out to people, but he never let that hold him back.

“When I first got Mobile-Fit by Integrity Fitness started, there was nothing like it. What I built was Canada’s only outdoor mobile fitness boot camp studio,” he says.

“I had to work seven days a week with no vacation and I had to surround myself with people who believed in what I was doing.”

But his perseverance and passion to make a difference through fitness paid off and in 2005, Walker opened Paul’s Boot Camp (PBC) by Integrity Fitness – a first-of-its-kind, rigorous training service for women that features a number of intense indoor and outdoor boot camp classes.

In the outdoor classes, the participating women train in an open field in Boyd Park through a variety of challenging and effective exercise activities and routines. His indoor studios also offer an array of boot camp sessions. Both options provide equipment and fun music, so women don’t have to worry about bringing any gear.

With a member base of around 1,500 and two convenient locations at Langstaff and Weston Road and on Hwy 27 in Vaughan, Paul’s Boot Camp continues to present a friendly, uplifting and versatile way to exercise. In addition to his boot camp classes, Walker says he’ll be offering other helpful services to members.

“We’re going to be changing our services and expanding again,” he says. “This will be our fourth expansion in four years and we’re going to be offering things like chiropractic care, pilates, yoga and fusion fitness. We want to offer different types of fitness when people come in as well as the boot camp and training we already have.” www.integrityfitness.ca 905.482.FITT(3488)

Canada’s first retailer of exclusive fashion luxury jewelry
A two-tone Tag Heuer Sports Elegance model was the first watch that Haigo Derian sold. He was just 13. “When you’re that young, it’s tough to convince a customer that you’re reputable, but I knew my stuff,” says Derian, who continues to cater to that same client two decades later. With extensive formal diamond training and years of experience managing his father’s respected company, L’Oro Jewelry, Derian decided it was time for a new venture. In 2007, he teamed up with lifelong friend Jeff Karadjian and opened the doors of Cupido in Vaughan Mills mall. “We wanted to create a concept that focused on a gap in the market – a retail environment that’s fresh, new and that specifically satisfies branded fashion luxury products,” he says. Unlike most traditional jewelry stores, Cupido carries a rare mix of brands from around the world. From DeMaria, Scott Kay and Pandora, to Hermès, U-Boat and Michael Kors, there is a piece that suits every personality. We strive to give every client as much information about each product we sell, says Karadjian. With little else like it in the industry, Cupido has become an instant success.

Karadjian’s business savvy is a perfect complement to Derian’s industry expertise, which led the pair to create a second location in the trendy Bayview Village Mall. “Jeff is a very creative guy; he’s always on the cutting-edge and loves doing things that aren’t mainstream. We’ve always had a similar vision of doing something that wasn’t the norm,” says Derian, who is proud of how quickly their vision has materialized.“We each bring something different to the table. It’s a perfect business partnership,” adds Karadjian. Despite the initial challenges of relaying Cupido’s unconventional concept to a traditional industry, Derian and Karadjian make it a priority to attend global trade shows and discover new trends before they make it to the marketplace. The pair has lustrous plans to expand the business by opening new locations over the next five years. “I love the fact that every day is different. It keeps things interesting,” says Karadjian.

An inspiring range of mainstream brands is what best characterizes Cupido’s conquest in a competitive industry. While Derian and Karadjian may be naturally enthused to slip on a different watch every day, they are consistently striving to stay ahead of the times. “It’s an evolution. At the end of every day we’re one step closer to our ultimate goal of creating the lead role in this segment which we call fashion luxury,” says Derian. www.cupidodesigns.com, Bayview Village: 647.346.2176, Vaughan Mills: 905.669.8522

Whether it is with a bookshelf or a set of customized curtains, Rosalia Fazzari puts a smile on the face of every home and business owner she decorates for.

Fazzari started working as an interior decorator from her home, decorating her own space and putting together many striking and innovative looks. Recognizing that she had a knack for transforming the blandest of rooms into spectacular areas, Fazzari wanted to share the feeling of walking into a place adorned with beauty and elegance with others.

“Working with people and seeing how they react to the transformation of their home is very fulfilling to me,” she says.

In 2004, she opened Tapestry Decor – a décor centre offering full interior design and decorating services to help mesmerize and enhance the appearance of a home or business. Customers can also purchase one-of-a-kind accessories, including antiques, browse through a variety of faux finishes and custom draperies, in-home consultations and full renovations.

“The idea of Tapestry Decor came to me because a tapestry itself has many faces and colours, along with weaves and prints. I think this reflects all the diverse people and many different styles and textures that they may have when they come to me with their décor needs and visions,” says Fazzari.

For the past 14 years, Fazzari has used her determination to build and establish a business that merges her passion and talent in interior decorating with her desire to help people achieve their dream look.

Lighting, area rugs, paint colours and even the arrangement of your furniture are all elements Fazzari says can express a lot about a room and the people who own the home or business. That’s why Tapestry Décor steps in to help people create their perfect, balanced look.

“People may not have the simplest solutions for arranging certain accessories or colours, whereas someone like myself – I go in and I help them to create that flow and obtain the look they want.”

“Whether it be in the wood I select, or the glass, granite, or finishes that I choose, there’s a huge variety of unique looks that I can create,” she says.

Not many banquet halls are quite like The Venetian, where you can look around and admire huge mosaics and glance up at a ceiling decorated with inspiring paintings and mouldings. The lobbies feature double tiers of gold, off-white and beige. The light reflects on the colours, juxtaposed with those of the mosaics and paintings to create an architectural masterpiece – a hall that not only displays art but is, in itself, a work of art.

The Venetian accommodates a variety of events, cultures and needs. It hosts everything from bachelor parties and showers to sacraments and weddings, including bar and bat mitzvahs and can cater to a wide variety of cuisines including Kosher, European, Chinese and Middle Eastern. Clients can also opt for a more traditional menu. “We pride ourselves on the diverse selection of food and services offered,” says owner Joseph Mete.

Guests can design their own menus and events in any of the rooms, which can hold up to 900 guests, including a VIP boardroom that can fit 24. Each function has its own separate lobby and suites, so “you never have a bride looking at another bride,” explains Mete. The whole environment is high-class and personal.

With its impeccable food, exquisite scenery and extensive facilities, it’s no wonder The Venetian won the 2005 Vaughan Chamber of Commerce Hospitality award. The hall sets high standards – it has a deluxe bar and offers a hot towel service after dinner. But the decoration is what takes your breath away right from the outset. As Mete says, “If you have a venue that looks nice, people respect it in a different manner.”

The Venetian will undergo renovations in January 2011. “Moulding, pin lighting, full finishing … there will even be new carpeting and chairs,” adds Mete. Proactive by nature, The Venetian prides itself on its innovative design concepts and dedication to consistently surpassing expectations. “It’s all about the fine details. We often get phone calls days after a wedding from the bride and groom telling us how amazed their guests were by the venue,” says Mete. As with anywhere, the service is only as good as its servers, a fact that Mete openly acknowledges when referring to his employees: “No one’s better. Everyone brings something different to the table.” From its extensive selection of table cloths to its glistening cutlery, The Venetian definitely brings something different to the world of hospitality. www.thevenetian.ca 905.660.1110

1923 REEVES FLORIST & NURSERY
Originally established as a market garden in 1923 by Frank and Hazel Reeves, Reeves Florist & Nursery has continually transformed itself to meet the needs of its growing customer base. Today, after over 80 years in the green business, Reeves has become a mecca for green thumbs everywhere. A complete retail garden centre, florist and gift shop, Reeves is acknowledged as one of the largest and most successful centres in the GTA, drawing in customers from all over Toronto, due to its reputation for quality, selection and knowledgeable staff. The comprehensive selection of exotic plants and flowers promises to add unique colour and life to your garden. www.reevesnursery.ca

1950 Ganz
It all began with one doll. On a trip to visit his sons Jack and Sam in Toronto, Samuel Ganz brought with him a doll that he had seen being made in New York City. Shortly after, Ganz Toys was established in 1950. Ganz is now a leading toy company in Canada, with offices in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Shanghai. This business, now headed by Howard Ganz, the founder’s grandson, also produces giftware, candles, garden décor and more. www.ganz.com

1952 MOSCONE TILE
When Benny Moscone first began his small company in 1952, he ran it out of his home with the help of his wife. Today, Moscone Tile has become a family legacy, with Moscone’s children (Anna, Vince, Laura, Nina and her husband, Anthony) leading the way. A powerhouse in its industry, Moscone Tile is Toronto’s go-to establishment for residential and tile installation, furnishing luxury condominiums, newly constructed homes, subdivisions and more with its stunning imported tile, marble and stone manufacturing from its new location on Jane Street in Maple. “Since we were kids, we listened to shoptalk about the business as it grew,” explains Anna Moscone. “We’re the second generation, however, we’ve inherited our father’s core values and expanded on them, while maintaining that level of quality and service.” www.mosconetile.com

1968 COSMO MUSIC
Whether you see music as a hobby or a calling, Cosmo Music gives you the keys you need to let your talent flourish. As the largest interactive music store of its kind, this superstore has been wowing its customers for over 40 years, providing an unprecedented selection of guitars, pianos, keyboards, drums, recording software and much more. Owned by Tom Hebert, Cosmo also offers music lessons in its prestigious School of Music, so that your budding Bach or young Jimmy Page can get the guidance and direction of a professional. www.cosmomusic.ca

1969 NINO D’AVERSA BAKERY LTD.
It all began in 1969, when Nino D’Aversa and his brothers fused Canadian and Italian heritage by selling fresh bread and tasty espresso from inside their modest bakery. As the years passed and a new generation of D’Aversas came to carry on their parents’ legacy, the once tiny shop became a staple in the community, now reigning as a premier bakery with three locations. “Many of our customers have grown up with us,” says co-owner Domenic D’Aversa. “People always tell us that they remember coming in here when they were kids.” Today, the D’Aversa name is synonymous with freshness, quality and tradition. 416.638.3271

1970 CONCORD FOOD CENTRE LTD.
Back in the 1930s, Joseph Greco started offering the freshest fruits and high-quality vegetables he could find, thus beginning a tradition that continues on today through Concord Food Centre, now run by his grandson Joe Greco. Concord continues to live by its mantra to give its customers the freshest perishables and merchandise that they want at competitive prices, within a clean, friendly environment with a knowledgeable, helpful staff. www.concordfoodcentre.com

1970 EUROPA JEWELLERS
Everyone knows that working with family can bring about problems. But for brothers-in-law Anthony Gennaro and Mauro Di Tacchio, hard work and comradeship became the key to their success. “We want customers to know they’re getting quality, respect, customer service and are dealing with friends,” says Gennaro. “I would measure success by the amount of smiles and compliments we bring to people,” he adds. The two cite their fathers as role models, as they taught them perseverance. A family run business since 1970, the establishment spills with expensive goods, so you can enjoy the finer things in life while Europa dazzles you with years of experience. www.europajewellers.com

1970 PINE VIEW PONTIAC BUICK SALES LTD.
Along with the other casualties of General Motors, Frank Romeo from Pine View was forced to make a decision: not to give up. Carrying an antique company since 1970 on his back, Pine View will be undergoing some extreme changes in the near future. From Dec. 31, 2009, the 39-year-old business will transition into an independent dealership, with lease and sales options for a selection of different models. The body shop will continue to thrive in the service department. Through these difficult times, Pine View’s business carries on through a challenging new step. 905.851.2851

1970 TORONTO RV CENTRE
For over 35 years, motor homes from Toronto RV have been released into the wild for travel convenience and smooth sailing. With tailored amenities such as three-piece bathrooms, three-burner propane and enough space to hold up to 60 gallons of water, Toronto RV motor homes are fully equipped and offered in a variety of sizes. On behalf of owner Clay Foster, a Toronto RV representative says: “In the last 35 years of the business, Toronto RV has been selling up to an average of 100 motor homes per year in different sizes and classes!” www.torontorv.com

1974 ANGELO’S GARDEN CENTRE
Consider the Ammendolia family the Brady Bunch of the retail world. Angelo and Elena opened their garden centre in 1974, after arriving to a new country. Their motivation to succeed stemmed from their need to support six children. Help from numerous family members is evident in the six-plus acres of gardening products that they offer today. “Working with family can be very intense and you have to be very diplomatic, but I love my family so it’s worth it,” says owner and manager Stella Ammendolia. She measures success by, “Wanting to come to work every day and enjoying it and really making an effort to make your employees and your customers happy.
1977 AL PALLADINI’S PINE TREE FORD LINCOLN
“Any Palladini is a pal of mine!” You may have heard the commercial, but these were words that entrepreneur Al Palladini lived by. He ensured that every customer walking through the doors of his car dealership was treated as a friend and was satisfied with their purchase. This mentality began in 1977, and continues with his son, Franco Palladini. The work ethic of the Palladini family is still at the core of this business, having been named the No. 1 volume truck dealer in Ontario for the past four years. www.alpalladinis.com

Then came Veritas Tools, Algrove Publishing and Canica Design, a medical/surgical instrument company. As the companion to the cracker and the soulmate of wine, cheese enhances the taste of other foods, and is simply delectable – even when enjoyed alone.

In an age of after-dinner cheese platters and wine parties, artesian cheeses have become a symbol of culture, refinement and eminence. Whether you’re rubbing elbows at a fundraiser or fine dining in the city, there’s a good chance that cheese will be part of the big night. And of course, there’s no doubt that you just can’t throw the perfect gathering without it.

With hundreds of cheese varieties on the market, choosing the right one to pair with your wine or knowing which is most nutritionally beneficial can be a challenge. But no one knows better than Albert, William and Joe Borgo of Quality Cheese.

Located in Vaughan, Quality Cheese manufactures over a dozen selections of European specialty cheeses right inside its modern dairy facility. The cheeses can be found at select retailers and restaurants throughout
the GTA. So if you’ve ordered a mouth-watering Caprese salad or a rich Stracchino risotto at one of Toronto or Vaughan’s hottest restaurants, you’ve probably tasted the unmatched freshness that is Quality Cheese.

An established name, Quality Cheese has earned a great deal of respect and recognition in the industry since Almerigo Borgo Sr. spearheaded its legacy in 1988. Soon after its inception, the company became recognized as the only brie producer in Ontario, winning a gold medal for the French-style cheese in 2000.

“When my father founded the company, many of the cheeses that are now domestic to Canada were unknown at the time,” explains Albert, the company’s vice president. Now in its fourth generation of family tradition, Quality Cheese has come full circle with its Bella Casara brand of buffalo milk products, which was launched this past April at Pusateri’s Fine Foods. “We are now the only producer of buffalo milk cheese in Eastern Canada,” he says. Locally made and low in cholesterol, the calcium-rich cheese offers superior taste and nutritious health benefits.

With only two farmers in Ontario producing buffalo milk, this delicate class of cheese is a rarity in the
province – making it that much more desirable. “This is huge for Canada because we are pioneering a brand new cheese right here, the way my father did when he started the company,” shares Albert. “It’s a challenge, but it’s exciting because we’re breaking new ground.”

So what’s special about cheese produced from buffalo milk? “The milk is richer and higher in fat and protein, which produces a richer, better-tasting cheese,” explains Albert. Also, by taking buffalo mozzarella and ricotta from its birthplace of Italy and making it a household product, Quality Cheese has created a local, greener good.

So next time you’re grocery shopping or dining in the city, make the right choice for you and the environment by asking for Quality Cheese’s Bella Casara buffalo products.

“Hair should reflect the individual, and reveal inner beauty,” says Robert Amado, creative director of Amado Salon and Spa. “It’s important to take into consideration a client’s facial structure, personality and lifestyle in order to create a look that best suits them,” he says of his work philosophy.

With 11 years of styling experience under his belt, the Vancouver-born stylist is master of his craft. Revered in his field, Amado pursued illustrious careers at various salons before opening his own this past February.

A beauty oasis, the salon is armed with all the fixings, offering colouring, cut-and-styling, highlighting, aesthetic work from makeup to total body care, and bridal packages – to name a few. Set in the quaint town of Kleinburg, clients are greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere, skipping the rushed pace of the city. “The décor is modern and up-to-date, giving way to a relaxing experience,” says Amado.

With the help of Eufora, a revolutionary line of organic hair-care products, Amado and his team of experts create personalized looks while catering to hair’s unique needs. “We have many alternatives today, allowing me to provide a healthier environment for my guests and staff,” he says.

“I think hair should reflect the individual, and reveal inner beauty.” – Robert Amado

A colour specialist with a dynamic background, Amado holds a cache of colourist diplomas, helmed from various colour companies. Often travelling as a colour educator across North America, Amado has risen to the top of his field. Through his hard work and experience, he has earned recognition through countless awards, and has appeared on industry-related hair shows as a featured guest artist.

Fusing his honesty with impeccable vision, Amado sculpts, textures and colours hair to reach its maximum potential. “For me, hairdressing is an art; it’s that stroke of passion that leads to the perfect creation,” he explains. “When I dream, I dream in colour.”

Finding a delicious meal in a friendly urban atmosphere has just become easier. If you’re up for an experience that transcends the average date with your local trattoria, it’s worth taking a trip uptown. This summer, the opening of Di Manno Ristorante will offer a savoury piece of Italy and a touch of Mediterranean fusion to patrons throughout the city. The upscale eatery is set to unleash some of the freshest and finest gourmet cuisine, combined with an unbeatably warm encounter.

Specializing in preparing heavenly meals is not something the establishment takes lightly. “It’s more than just food; it’s something social and comforting,” says co-founder Nancy Di Manno. “Dining is a great way to unwind with a good glass of wine and get back to what life should really be all about – no stress, no hassle, just pure enjoyment.” Since her family started to specialize in the bakery business 30 years ago, Nancy was no stranger to the gastronomical creations commonly found in her childhood kitchen. “The aroma always brings me back to when my mother was cooking, preparing and trying new things,” she says. “I was always around fresh bread, homemade ciambelle, pizzas and pastries.” Since then, the family’s successful bakery expanded passionately over the years, leading to a dream for a beautiful restaurant.

The precious memories of the Di Manno household have become the cornerstone of the new restaurant’s philosophy. “The happiest times at home always happened in the kitchen,” Nancy says. Unlike any other establishment in the area, Di Manno Ristorante prides itself on a menu using only fresh herbs and ingredients. An open-concept kitchen creates carefully selected southern Italian dishes, such as tuna carpaccio and squid ink risotto, but is still nimble enough to serve top-flight Provimi veal chop and an array of savoury fish entrees that beg your return. Topping off every meal wouldn’t be possible without the perfect wine pairing. Di Manno’s carefully selected wine list features new and old-world selections, including vintages from Italy, France, Chile, Australia, California, and Ontario.

The Di Manno experience offers the extra mile in personalized service. “I want our customers to connect with the place and feel like they’ve been taken care of on a different level,” Nancy says. “As long as our guests are satisfied, it doesn’t matter what we have to do to please them.” True to her word, Nancy prefers the charming touch of getting to know her guests, taking note of their tastes and preferences. “I don’t want patrons to feel like they’re here just for dinner. I want them to walk in the door, get to know us, and ultimately feel that same level of bliss we encounter around the table.”

Harnessing that feeling won’t be difficult in Di Manno’s eclectically contemporary dining room, flowing with shades of black, white, and grey. The triangular-shaped space beams a sophisticated, sleek feeling, inviting guests to unwind in an intimately posh atmosphere. For business luncheons or corporate meetings, an etched niche provides seating for eight to 10 people, offering an enclosed dining affair. Of course, a tempting attraction remains the restaurant’s place-to-be-seen patio, already causing quite a stir this summer. A European feel complements the outdoor lounge area, ideal for a glass of Pinot Grigio and petals of fritteline di fior di zucchine – lightly battered zucchini flowers.

One of the only genuinely Italian venues in the area, Di Manno is proving to be a source of celebration for local residents. Equipped to host full-fledged private functions, the restaurant is a great addition to the community, offering an upscale environment with a convenient, nearby locale. Each initiative is part of the realization of a dream, centered on the centuries-old tradition of food. Together with its supporting bakeries, Di Manno Ristorante is sure to give loyal followers their fill of gourmet cuisine for decades to come – an appetizingly passionate tradition.

If the 19th century German chemist A.F.W. Brix was alive today, he’d surely be wining and dining at the restaurant bearing his name. Brix Napa Valley Grille & Wine Bar is named after the inventor’s scale system, used to measure grape sugar content. It’s a cleverly appropriate title for an establishment that provides an attentive pairing of food and wine.

Almost as old as the kitchen table itself, a healthy line of 30-plus years of experience speaks for an encounter at Brix. “My wife, Teresa, and I have built some great venues over the years, based on a mutual passion for great dining and entertainment,” says owner and operations manager Mike Wilson. Together with partners Antonella Costanzo and executive chef Stephen Sandiford, the team knows just how to serve up a gastronomically pleasing time. “We’ve included an upscale supper club element, with ambience, quality food and entertainment, which ultimately caters to a refined corporate clientele,” says Wilson.

Walking into Brix, guests are welcomed by a mildly lit, soothing dining room, complete with aromas of striking cuisine. “It’s not an average, run-of-the-mill restaurant,” Wilson admits. “Besides the fact that everything is made fresh, we have professional chefs that prepare everything from scratch, made-to-order.” Must-have signature items include the restaurant’s Beer Braised Short Ribs and Pan Roasted Snapper in a puttanesca sauce. The whole experience comes from the history of appreciating a good meal. “My mother was a great cook, and my wife is Italian, so homemade dishes are a must.”

But what really makes Brix a Napa-style mecca is its selection of fairly priced wines. “We have an in-house sommelier that will pair the perfect wine with your dinner,” Wilson says. “Our wine list was recently named one of the best in northern Toronto by Tony Aspler,” he says about the renowned writer and guru, also known effectively as “The Wine Guy.” Selections range from a refreshing Morgan Winery Sauvignon Blanc, to a full-bodied San Giorgio Amarone. And after a carefully tailored meal, guests are swayed to stay by sounds of live bands and visiting DJs. Much like Nava Restaurant & Bar, the establishment’s sister venue – across the street in the East Beaver Creek restaurant complex – Brix is equipped with a stage area, dance floor, and state-of-the-art sound system.

The restaurant’s ongoing success is ultimately a reflection of its owners. “It’s a team effort that comes naturally to each of us,” Wilson says. Moving forward, their restaurant continues to give its patrons a gratifying fill, while giving back to women’s shelters and various charities. Whether visiting because of its gourmet cuisine or outstanding reputation, Brix deserves a raised glass and a toast of celebration.

More than just a routine, enjoying a break is a way of life in Italy. The idea of sipping coffee and savouring a meal is a cherished tradition that has now found its way to the city. Opening this past spring at Jane and Rutherford’s bustling intersection, Zona Caffè is a unique hot spot, offering more than your average hot table and bar. “We wanted to create a place where friendships are made as you come to unwind,” says owner and founder Lina DeRocchis. “It has a very modern design and European feel – all of our equipment is imported from Italy.” Walking into Zona Caffè, patrons instantly notice the cool, soothing décor, infused with aromas of authentic Italian food.

With experience operating cafés, bars and bakeries for over 20 years, Lina’s husband, Silvano, lends a hand when escaping his own business. “The interaction with people is what I enjoy the most,” he says. “Over the years I’ve developed great pride in serving patrons, which has led to lasting friendships.” The family owned-and-operated business produces some of the most delicious, casareccia-style dishes and desserts.

“One thing people tell us is that our coffees – espressos, cappuccinos and lattes – are among the best they’ve tried,” Lina says, pointing out that her Victoria Arduino espresso machine is one of the first in Canada. Guests come to Zona Caffè to enjoy everything from an early breakfast, hot lunch, and evening dessert, along with special functions and private catering.
